The 28th Massachusetts Regiment is part of the Southern Skirmish Association (SoSkAn) the UK’s longest standing American Civil War Re-enactment and Living History Society having been founded in 1968. SoSkAn is a charitable educational organisation based in the U.K whose purpose it is to recreate a living history of the American Civil War and to honour those brave souls who fell in the 1861-65 war. In 2005 we formed the U.S. Marine Detachment with help from the coordinator of Marines aboard the USS Constellation in Baltimore Harbour USA. The Constellation is the last surviving Civil War ship still afloat, we are the first historians to portray U.S Civil War Marines in the UK we were recently invited by Indigo Films (USA) to take part in a two hour dramatised documentary called “USS Constellation: Fight for Freedom” to be shown on the History Channel.
Becoming a member of the 28th Massachusetts / Marines is a great way to make new friends, Ladies and children are very welcome too. There are many different roles for family members to portray and you will be in very good company as the Society prides itself on its family friendly activities. Many members choose to camp in the traditional military way in white canvas tents however for those who do not want to sleep authentically SoSkAn provides a Family Camp where caravans and modern tents can be put up. In order to honour those who fell in the 1861-65 war we take the military side of our hobby very seriously but we like to enjoy ourselves and rid ourselves of the everyday stress of the 21st century and have fun! If you can’t make every event that is fine, you won’t be the only one! Why not come and join us for the day or weekend? We can usually lend you a uniform and once you have decided to join we can provide you with equipment until you can get your own together. |
